January 2017 Legislative Update
We are gearing up and excited for our upcoming UDHA Day at the Capitol on February 10 at the Utah State Capitol Building! That morning, we will be lucky enough to hear from Michelle Martin and Lisa Welch and chat to our representatives and senators about bills that pertain to dental hygiene. One in particular is Senate Bill 39, which restores Medicaid dental benefits for adults with disabilities.
Just a little history on Medicaid here in Utah to catch us all up to speed- In 2009, all dental care was cut from Medicaid due to funding. Now, groups are slowing trying to add dental back into Medicaid, like with the introduction of this bill. The tricky part of it is the money. If this bill passes, it will cost $1.4 million.
What can you do to help?
- Come to the Day at the Capitol! We want to show our dental hygiene presence here in Utah.
- Contact the governor (801-538-1000).
- Reach out to your senator or representative to help them understand the importance of quality dental care and good overall health. To find out who your leadership is, click on this link (https://le.utah.gov/GIS/findDistrict.jsp) and type in your address. You can then email or call them.
Another bill to watch for is Senate Bill 51. This bill will change how Medicaid is paying providers. Utah has been doing a pilot program for the last few years were Medicaid was taken over by Delta Dental in the Wasatch Front. With this, people who qualified for Medicaid had to go to certain assigned providers, which regularly broke up families to go to many different dentists, and restricted access to care for many patients. This bill proposes going back to the old method with fee for service.
See you on the Hill on February 10!
